Four club members celebrated a relatively mild New Year’s Day 2005 by riding in the Southborough & District Wheelers’ 10-mile time trial on the Q10/10 course (Bethersden to Singleton roundabout and back). The race was won by Sean Yates (In Gear Racing) in 22 minutes 18 seconds. Thornton Road Club results are given below. Congratulations are due to Russ Mason who won the first prize (a bottle of Champagne) for the best improvement on previous best time.

Six club time trials are proposed this summer on the Q10/12 Romney Marsh course (St Mary-in-the-Marsh – Newchurch – Ivychurch – St Mary-in-the-Marsh), starting on Tuesday 17 May 2005. Details are given below. Please note that three of the rides are arranged for Tuesday evenings starting at 7.00 pm, while the other three are arranged for Saturday mornings starting at 7.30 am. The course record set last season was 24 minutes 20 seconds attributed to Steve Clarke of GS Invicta on 4 September 2004. The best time by a Thornton RC rider was 26 minutes 48 seconds, set by Ian Campbell on 24 July 2004.

If you would like to join in any of these events, come to Newchurch Village Hall, Romney Marsh, no later than half an hour before the start time, to register and pay the entry fee. Good riding.
Road repairs on the Thornton ten-mile time trial course delayed the start of activities in the 2005 season. The meetings schedules for 17 May and 4 June were cancelled, so that the first TT was held on 14 June. Results are shown below. In addition, five Thornton riders were awarded medals for completion of the Kent Air Ambulance Challenge Event held on 30 May 2005.They were Ian Campbell, Luke Klugman, Colin Tuckwell, Jeff Lyle, and Gordon Davis.

Six club members participated in the 15-mile time trial held by the Veteran Time Trials Association (Kent Group) on 2 October 2005 at the Q15/4 course (Romden Castle - Haffenden Quarter - Bethersden - A28 east for 3 miles - left to Old Surrenden Manor - Mill Farm - Pluckley Thorne - left to Maltman's Hill and Smarden). A veteran cyclist is aged 40 or more. Results were:

Among the veterans, Eric Bates finished 17th overall, Albert Lainson 32nd, and Gordon Davis 39th from a field of 39 veteran riders. In the total field of 51 riders (veterans and non-veterans), Donald Houghton was 34th, Eric Bates 35th, Paul Gunner 46th, Albert Lainson 48th, Peter Vickermann 49th, and Gordon Davis 51st. The fastest veteran on the day was Phil Bull (Gemini BC) at 34:57. The fastest rider overall was Ben Instone (…a3crg/Bike Doc) at 33:20.
