Fourteen riders were in attendance at this, the club’s first time trial of the 2009 season. Riders enjoyed good light for the ride notwithstanding the 7.00 pm start. Good light was accompanied by a blustery southwest wind that moderated during the course of the event. Ambient temperature was about 10 Celsius; the roads were dry.
The best times for the evening’s ride were predictably below the course record of 22:06 while the average time for male riders, at 27:10, was better than last season’s first time trial. Colin Tuckwell and Michael Pumphrey, both Thornton riders, were placed first and second, ahead of the distinguished Dave Williams and Shay Giles. Rachelle Pumphrey had the best women’s time. Overall, this was an inspiring start to the season.

January 1, 2009: Southborough & District New Year’s Day 10-mile time trial
Five Thornton RC riders participated in the 2009 New Year’s Day 10-mile time trial held on the Q10/10 Bethersden-Ashford-Bethersden course. The event was extremely well attended, with about 59 riders taking part, of whom the majority (34) were veteran male competitors. Weather was favourable, with overcast but rain-free skies, an ambient temperature below 4 degrees Celsius, and a gentle northeast wind that assisted progress on the home stretch. Dave Wheeler, riding for Rye & District Wheelers, came first in the scratch rankings with a time of 22 min 43 sec. Average time for male veterans was 28 min 39 sec, which was 43 sec more than the standard. The best time for female veterans was 28 min 17 sec, while their average time was 33 min 31 sec, which was in excess of standard by 4min 33 sec. Thornton RC riders, all veterans, were generally below their respective veteran standards. In taking part however, they displayed courage and tenacity, and no doubt gained a resolve to enhance performance as the new season unfolds. Such is the value of this mid-winter ride. Results for Thornton RC riders compared to best and average times were as follows:
