Reports From Ashdown

This is the first report to come from the Hell Of the Ashdown, which Club members took part in last Sunday. The first comes courtesy of Danny.

This Sunday six Thornton RC riders took part in the Hell of Ashdown, with temperatures still at freezing at the allocated departure time of 9:30am; it proved to be a very cold and icy ride. A 1000 people pre-paid to enter this event, 650 started and 136 of them did not finish.! The six that took part were myself, Bob, Steve, Kevin, Jim and Matthew. Any chance of fast times were scuppered by long sections of thick ice which resulted in most walking apart from Bob who took on the role of a human snow plough, who never got off or more miraculously fell off! Same could not be said for the rest of us a number of whom made contact with the ice, not good; but no real injuries. The first half of the route we decided to stick together, which we managed to achieve. The significant climbs commence at the half way point with the Wall followed by the Col de Groombridge. Shortly after this the push for home commenced which felt the added effect of the organisers; who deciding to put even more undulating sections than normal!

The final climb of Star Hill saw Jim living up to his name of Diesel and disappearing up the road, with Steve behind us vowing "never doing this again far too hilly", myself and Bob took the wheel of some fast finishers who were racing along country lanes, containing significant patches of ice; with speeds touching 27mph, this was madness albeit it brought Jim back into view. With 50m to go Bob broke his chain and rolled over the line. This was a tough early sportive, which does live up to its name. It was good to see a good turnout from Thornton RC. Lets just hope the ice has melted at the next event!
